It’s been a long, a long time coming but, I know, a change is gonna come.
That verse feels empty right now yet, the background and cause for its creation, strangely familiar. Words born of struggle, loss, a country morally divided, turmoil, inexplicable deaths and darkness.
Upon the start of a new day on yesterday, I heard of a tragedy. Many lives lost. Many others injured amd oh, the hurt and pain that I felt from afar. I cannot imagine that of family members and close friends. At present, fifty- nine lives gone. Over five hundred injured. Countless lives changed forever. My heart goes out.
Although, time heals all wounds, my country is in turmoil. Utter turmoil on every side. Yet, Sam Cooke reminds us that if we keep pushing along. Push and force the issue. Speak out against what we know is wrong. Against organizations, such as the National Rifle Association (NRA) and pertinent gun laws which so easily arms those who seek to do harm. Push and command that our leaders in Congress, our leaders locally, sponsor new laws. Gun laws sponsored to save lives, not ruin them. Keep pushing and pressing at every side. A change is gonna come.
I read it somewhere that God is ’bout sick of our “thoughts and prayers” in times such as this. The Las Vegas Massacre. We send up our prayers with little else behind them. More is required from each of us. During my latest podcast, I challenged us all to Stand For Something. Here’s our golden opportunity. What can we do? We can speak out again and again. We can refuse to vote for those empowered and financed by the NRA. We can check on our loved ones and stop feeling as though we are giving folks their so- called privacy. We can stop hiding in plain sight, immersed in our own troubles. We can come out of hiding and inquire on what is needed today.
Some folks want to be loved and seen and noticed and I don’t have all of the answers but maybe, just maybe, we can start by being accountable for one another. A change is gonna come.
When we are finally, sick and tired of the killing. Tired of waking up to horrific headlines. Babies lost. Young folks with their full lives ahead, lost. Mommies and Daddies, brothers and sisters gone too soon. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust. Death come too soon.
Family, friends, neighbors, churches, politicians. It’s been a long, a long time coming but, I know, a change is gonna come.
Las Vegas you have my heart and mind.
Blessings.
