Principal Woods- Powell’s bio…

Jean D. Woods-Powell is principal of Information Technology High School in Long Island City, Queens.
Jean’s stance on her life’s work for children, youth, and the disenfranchised is built on the notion of “access and equity for all.” This has exemplified through Jean’s work as an English teacher, an assistant principal, and currently, as a principal. Jean has secured grants and has facilitated many initiatives to support youth with access to college/career experiences, resources such as computers and scholarships, and social/emotional wellness.
Outside of education, Jean is the co-director of the New York City Royal Family KIDS Camp (RFKC) which is a yearly weeklong, sleep-away, community camp that serves some of the worst cases of sexually, physically and emotionally abused children in the Foster Care and Administration for Children Service (ACS) systems. The goal of RFKC is to “provide a week’s worth of positive memories in the life of an abused child”. In addition, Jean has traveled and stayed in Haiti, Brazil, and the Philippines to work with youth and families, especially those that have experienced trauma. Her life’s work has truly reflected her humanitarian spirit and desire to positively impact those around her.
