The recent news and story concerning Actor Jussie Smollet being attacked and the subject of a possible hate crime by MAGA supporters is sickening and nothing less than despicable. I send prayers of healing to Jussie\u2019s heart, mind, body. Undoubtedly, the attack is sound evidence that this country is at a point where hate seems to prevail. We know that it cannot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The news of Jussie Smollet is one that I can personally attach myself. Upon hearing of the attack, my heart immediately went out to Jussie and also, brings forth a feeling of dread on behalf of my own child. My son could very easily have found himself the subject of similar news in Atlanta, Georgia where he resides. My beloved son, Kaylon Nico is a nearly twenty- four year old transgender male. Kaylon has been transitioning nearly all of his life. As Mom to a transgender person, I have been transitioning for not quite two years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Because Kaylon is transgender male and lives as such, throughout our journey, many have embraced us and have shown their love, acceptance and support. It has been quite amazing to see love prevail in the mist of our hate- filled culture with an administration which promotes division and exclusion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the alternative, Kaylon and I have also loss family and friends behind the transition. Those who cannot and will not fathom the act of not accepting one\u2019s gender assigned at birth. With this group, there is no love lost. We say our goodbyes with no animosity or regret. There is no in between. Though, I respect those with different views regarding the LGBTQ community, it is too hard to embrace my new journey of life as Mom to a transgender young adult son yet, remain close to those who disagree and disapprove of the lifestyle. In this space, there is no room for compromise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With familial and friend relationships, love and acceptance are our nonnegotiables. If acceptance is too much to ask, love and a semblance of understanding. Anything else, is simply too heavy a load to carry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To Jussie Smollet and my own beautiful kid, remain strong and walk tall in this often cruel world. It takes strength and courage to own your truth, refusing to hide, refusing to dim your light. Thank you for your unwillingness to compromise. Those that offend and hurt you, we who stand with you, will not allow them to hinder progress. Keep being a beacon of light so that, all who cannot see, by your brilliant light, will soon find their way. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
